The Jamaica Tourist Board, through its Ultimate Jamaica Staycation site is running a promotion just for Jamaican residents. “Experience Jamaica – The Ultimate Jamaica Staycation” is aimed at getting locals to go out and experience what our tourism sector has to offer. Summer is the low season in our tourism market and as such vendors are eager to woo us local residents. There are discounts on hotels, transportation and attractions from participating providers. There are some good deals whether you are looking for a complete staycation, a weekend away, or a fun jaunt. For instance Chukka Tours is offering 40% off for locals at all their locations. The offer period runs from April 14 – June 30 and August 12 – November 12, 2016.

I’ll mention that Leisure for Pleasure Tours offers cruises to Cuba that depart from Montego Bay.  This cruise circumnavigates Cuba and makes  stops in 4 cities. Some friends of mine tried it out and enjoyed themselves thoroughly. I’m hoping to do it myself one day.  They also offer other cruises from Montego Bay with itineraries covering Central America (Panama, Costa Rica, Belize, Mexico etc.), as well as Colombia and Cayman. As the cruises depart from Montego Bay, there is no US visa required for travel. Also, you don’t have to fly to Miami or some other cruise port first in order to access interesting cruises. As such there is much less hassle. I think it is well worth looking into if you want to try something different.

Unfortunately not all participants are specific with quoting the percentage discount. This prevents you from getting a real sense of what the final rates are at a glance. Hopefully that will be adjusted going forward.

Tips

• Call directly to get the preferential rate as not all participants will have the local rate on their websites.
• Calling will also save you the trouble of trying to find the original rates and having to attempt working out the discount yourself.
