Blue Ridge Restaurant
Blue Ridge Restaurant
I had seen a feature in the newspaper on the Blue Ridge Restaurant and decided at that time that I wanted to check it out. The Restaurant is situated on a family coffee farm at Salt Hill, near Mavis Bank. The property also features guest cottages run by the same family. The restaurant is open only on weekends and operates on a reservations only basis.
Getting There
From Papine it should take about an hour to get up, maybe a little longer if you are unsure of the directions. If you are driving a sedan, it will be slower going in some spots. The final stretch at Salt Hill is not paved, but isn’t inaccessible.
It’s not terribly hard to find. These directions are posted on their website:
“Start at Papine to Gordon Town. At Gordon Town Police Station make a right & go across the bridge. Follow road for about 20 min. to Guava Ridge; stay to the left. Follow to Quashie Gap, make a right & the look for Blue Ridge Signs.”
If you get as far as Mavis Bank proper, then you have gone too far. They have little directions mosaic on their page with landmarks so you can know if you are on the right track. There are also some signs posted along the route.
What we saw
There is an absolutely stunning view from the terrace. In the distance you can see Blue Mountain Peak looming large. That day it was shrouded in ominous looking clouds. The vista is really quite breathtaking.
The sun was shining brightly, but with the altitude the weather was also pleasantly cool.
The cottages seem like a good place for a relaxing getaway from the city without having to go too far out.
What we ate
For the apppetizer round I had the soup of the day, a good pepperpot soup. Stef had the popcorn chicken, which was served with actual popcorn.
For the main, I eventually settled on the guava glazed pork chops which came highly recommended. My pork chops were done to perfection; thumbs way up! I had every bite and was very tempted to nibble the bones. I also had their freshly squeezed limeade which was very refreshing. Stef had the linguine in creamy garlic sauce with grilled chicken. The other options for this dish included replacing the garlic sauce with a creamy cilantro sauce and the chicken with shrimp. We also got a side of the home made mac and cheese.
For dessert I had their signature blue hot chocolate of which I had seen many photos of. It’s more the novelty than anything, but that’s not to say though that it isn’t good hot chocolate! Stef had mini thai donuts. These were really good and were served with two sauces. Serving of the donuts was very dramatic as the dish was accompanied by lighted sparklers and a Buddha statue on the tray.
